Are You in a Toxic Relationship?

toxic relationships

The word toxic means “containing or being poisonous material, especially when capable of causing serious injury or death.” Most people think of “toxic” as relating to chemicals and potential physical harm; however, many relationships can be their own version of “toxic.” If you are involved in a toxic relationship, it can be challenging to co-exist with the person and threaten your ability to achieve and maintain sobriety.

How to Identify a Toxic Person in Your Life

Think about the people you spend the most time with and who has the most impact on you. Consider your parents, grandparents, siblings, adult children, friends, co-workers, and anyone else you consider an essential part of your life. Now, think about how they may influence you. Do they encourage you to live your best life? Do they recognize that you are dealing with an addiction to drugs or alcohol and support any efforts you make to achieve sobriety? Do they build you up and help you believe in yourself and your abilities? Compile a list that divides everyone into categories of those who positively impact your life and those who are negative.

Taking Action With Your List

Look at the names on your list that are toxic. They might be people who also struggle with addiction and do not want to be left behind if you get help. They might see you already in recovery yet try to tempt you with old habits. They may give you the message that you will never fully recover. Ask yourself if continuing to have contact with this person is in your best interest. You may find that having a conversation to let them know how you feel works best. With others, the right course may be to simply cut off contact. Choose to surround yourself with healthy-minded people who have your best interest at heart and leave the toxicity in your rearview mirror.
