Tips to Improve Your Self-Worth

Tips to Improve Your Self-Worth

Have you been feeling unconfident or low about yourself? Regardless if you are new in sobriety or you have been around the sun a few times sober, low self-worth can set in at any time for anyone. Life happens and some situations that you walk through can blindside you and bring you down before you realize it is even happening. Since you are in recovery, you may also find yourself having those days when you question why you must identify as an “alcoholic” or an “addict” when you just want to be “normal”, whatever normal means. All these things can make your self-worth plummet rather than rise-up and keep you from showing up in your life. If this sounds anything like you, you can begin using these tips to improve your self-worth.

Eliminate the negative self-talk

You are the only person who can change your inner dialogue. If you continue to believe, think, say, accept, all the negative discourse that you project about yourself, then that will be your truth every day no matter how distorted it is. Negative self-talk does nothing but tears your insides out. Start reciting positive affirmations to yourself in the mirror. You may be in a place that you are unsure of saying anything good about yourself so ask a loved, a sponsor, or a therapist to give you some ideas of your strengths and use them to strengthen your self-worth.

Eliminate the middleman

People can be mean and just because someone says something does not make it true. When someone says something hurtful, just walk away. Bounce these negative contradictions off your sponsor or therapist so you can move on from them. The rule of thumb in trying to gain your self-worth is that what other people think of you is none of your business, so stop relying on their acceptance and only accept genuine compliments.

Eliminate comparison

Keep in mind that “comparison is the thief of joy” as President, Theodore Roosevelt coined back in the day. You will never be someone else so trying to live someone else’s life. You are exactly where you are supposed to be and if you are aren’t, then take a second to see why and adjust. Confidence and self-esteem come from taking the actions that will better your life. Do things like work the steps, apply for a job or be of service to someone less fortunate.

Making strides in your self-worth must come from within and you can start today. Take time to do and say something positive about yourself because you are worth it.
