The Latest on JUUL

Since 2015, JUUL has been on the up and up in the e-cigarette industry. When they came out on the market, JUUL’s strategy was to attract those who wanted to quit smoking traditional cigarettes with a “healthier” version of vaping. Although tobacco was the main substance people were worried about, nicotine came in a close second and JUUL pods contain a high concentration of nicotine in them. What people were not expecting is that e-juice would turn out to the most adverse part of the e-cigarette especially with no Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulation. Now that the cat is out of the bag that JUUL was not upfront about how unsafe their product was, here is what you need to know about the latest statics regarding vaping and the changes that are taking place.

The Symptoms

For the last few years, it was hard to connect the symptoms people were having with vaping due to the short-term of the product. Persons that vaped started to have similar symptoms leading to lung illness including respiratory symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, and chest pain and other ailments such as nausea, vomiting, weight loss, fever, and fatigue. All of these symptoms have led individuals of all ages to develop lung illness due to using vaping devices such as JUUL.

The Statistics

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) put out some alarming statistics in October of 2019 from national and state findings of how vaping has played a role in the JUUL epidemic creating the outbreak of lung illness. According to the CDC’s report, approximately 1,500 cases of lung injury have been associated with vaping e-juice. In more devasting news, there have been 33 confirmed deaths in recent months caused by vaping and that number is expected to continually rise.

The Solution

The CDC is on a mission to educate, research, and use their platform to conduct congressional briefings, extensive laboratory testing, and develop guidance materials to help providers gather legitimate data. What the CDC is also doing is working closely with the FDA along with other national and state agencies to continue to gauge what is happening in the e-cigarette industry in order to better regulate the vaping epidemic and determine how to protect our youth in the future.
