Reasons Independence from Dependence Will Give You Freedom

July 4th is right around the corner and nothing is better than celebrating the nation’s independence into one of the most thriving countries in the world. The freedom that we get to enjoy is imparted by those who fought to give us the independence we have today. In the same sense, there are those who are struggling with their own war with drug and alcohol addiction. In order to get their own independence from these substances, they have to understand their dependence to comprehend how they will gain the freedom that they need from drugs and alcohol.

You can start living shame-free.

A person who abuses drugs and alcohol will usually do whatever it takes to get what they need. Often this means legal, relational, and financial consequences that make a person feel bad about themselves. The cycle of starting and stopping, and then starting again can also bring imperious shame that gets hard to get rid of the longer the substance abuse prevails. Getting sober does not mean that all the shame will instantly go away, but you can stop piling on the shame by taking actions to not pick up a drink or a drug.

You can start doing the right thing.

The more an individual works on themselves with suggested recovery measures, the easier it is to chip away at the pain they have been holding onto. Taking the right means while in recovery will be instrumental in getting healthy emotionally, physically, and spiritually. In doing so, inevitably, this person has a better chance to start living in the solution of their sobriety and do the right thing.

You can become a better version of yourself.

Addiction makes a person bodily, mentally and spiritually sick. To get well, going to treatment, going to therapy, and attending 12-Step meetings will give an individual an idea of what they need to make the changes that are necessary for long-term sobriety. Becoming aware of character defects, toxic patterns in relationships, and planning for relapse prevention are all ways that will positively improve a person’s demeanor. Unless a person understands their personal why, even once they get sober, they cannot change their behavior.

Independence from dependence is a step in the right direction to be able to live the life someone has probably always wanted to live sober. Recovery with fervent effort will give an individual “a new happiness” and “a new freedom” they will come to know.
