How Do I Deal with My Emotions after a Shooting?

How Do I Deal with My Emotions after a Shooting?

The unfortunate part of the news today is that there are tons of heartbreaking stories that bring down the morality of society. In August, the El Paso shooting was another incident that has brought more unnecessary pandemonium to the country. Chaos ensues from a shooting that can leave someone overwhelmed with depression and anxiety. To combat these emotions, they may find themselves self-medicating rather than facing the problem head-on. Although dealing with the trauma of the shooting to relieve your symptoms may not seem rousing, the sooner you work through your depression, anxiety, PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), or substance abuse, the sooner you can move on with your life in a positive manner.

Find the help you need.

You must know that the shooting is in no way, shape, or form your fault even though you may be taking it on. Understand that you could be experiencing negative side effects from the trauma that could keep you from functioning in life or make you suffer from survivor’s guilt, the feeling that you did not do enough to prevent the situation. Whether you have insomnia, panic attacks, trouble concentrating, or the loss of appetite, there is assistance to help you combat anything physical or mental you are experiencing. Find a therapist even if they are not specialized in trauma so they can direct you to someone who is. The point is to start somewhere to relieve the undue anguish you are feeling and know that you are not alone.

Make self-care a priority.

Even though you are getting the help you need, you must also continue to take care of yourself. Getting rest, eating healthy, staying hydrated, and exercising are all the best ways to keep your hormones and body functioning strong. Holistic therapies, mindfulness, and breathwork are all ways to keep your mental state and psyche in check. The trauma may be debilitating, but you should put your effort into keeping your body, mind, and soul as healthy as possible. When you encounter some sense of balance regarding your health, your emotions, and your spirituality, there is no doubt that you will feel better.

The series of events that occurred is unfortunate and regardless if you are there in person, or just heard it on the news, you have still been affected with the knowledge that anyone, anywhere could create this kind of ordeal which continues to happen more and more. Take care of yourself with everything that is happening so you can help to resolve the deplorable circumstances that were meant to hurt you and everyone else. Rise up in love, tolerance, and unity because the adversity does have to hold you down any longer.
